Viscous modes within the compressible boundary-layer flow due to a broad rotating cone

چکیده
We investigate the effects of compressibility andwall cooling on the stationary, viscous (Type II) instability mode within the 3D boundary layer over rotating cones with half-angle greater than 40◦. The stationary mode is characterised by zero shear stress at the wall and a triple-deck solution is presented in the isothermal case. Asymptotic solutions are obtained which describe the structure of the wavenumber and the orientation of this mode as a function of local Mach number. It is found that a stationary mode is possible only over a finite range of local Mach number. Our conclusions are entirely consistent with the results of Seddougui 1990, A nonlinear investigation of the stability models of instability of the trheedimensional Compresible boundary layer due to a rotating disc Q. J. Mech. Appl. Math., 43, pt. 4. It is suggested that wall cooling has a significant stabilising effect, while reducing the half-angle is marginally destabilising. Solutions are presented for air.

On the stability of the compressible boundary-layer flow over a rotating cone
We investigate the type I modes of instability within the compressible boundary-layer flow over a rotating cone, defined by general half angle ψ. The work extends previous studies into the compressible rotatingdisk flow (ψ = 90o) and incompressible rotating-cone flows. Generalised compressible von Kármán equations are established and solved numerically to give the laminar-flow profiles. We then...
متن کاملLinear growth rates of types I and II convective modes within the rotating-cone boundary layer
Abstract Experimental observations have shown that the transition characteristics of the boundary-layer flow over rotating cones depends on the cone half-angle. In particular, pairs of counter-rotating Görtler-type vortices are observed over cones with slender half-angles and co-rotating vortices are observed over broad cones. Garrett et al (2009 J. Fluid Mech. 622 209–32) have hypothesized the...
متن کاملSimilarity Solutions of Compressible Flow over a Rotating Cone with Surface Suction
We present solutions of the laminar compressible boundary-layer flows over the family of rotating cones subject to surface mass flux. The work is a generalization of previous studies of the compressible rotating-disk flow and incompressible rotating-cone flow without surface mass flux. Transformations are used which lead to a system of generalized von Karman equations with boundary conditions p...
متن کاملThe cross-flow instability of the boundary layer on a rotating cone
Experimental studies have shown that the boundary-layer flow over a rotating cone is susceptible to cross-flow and centrifugal instability modes of spiral nature, depending on the cone sharpness. For half-angles (ψ) ranging from propeller nose cones to rotating disks (ψ 40◦), the instability triggers co-rotating vortices, whereas for sharp spinning missiles (ψ < 40◦), counter-rotating vortices ...
متن کاملHeat Transfer in Three-Dimensional Flow along a Porous Plate
An analysis of heat transfer in the flow of a viscous, in-compressible fluid along an infinite porous plate is presented when the plate is subjected to a transverse sinusoidal suction. The flow field becomes three-dimensional due to this type of suction velocity. Expressions for the flow and temperature fields are obtained by series expansion method. It is found during the course of discussion ...
